Plain English

What is Generative Engine Optimisation?

Generative Engine Optimisation is the practice of structuring your content, business information and authority signals so that generative AI tools cite or recommend your business when someone asks a question, rather than giving a generic answer or naming a competitor. It targets ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, and it works on evidence rather than keywords.

Traditional search gave your buyer ten links and let them decide. A generative engine reads the web, forms a view, and hands back a short list of names. There is no page two to be on. You are either in the answer or you are not part of the conversation.

That changes what the work is. You are no longer competing for a position in an index. You are trying to become one of the businesses a model is confident enough to name, which depends on how clearly you explain what you do, how consistently your details appear everywhere else, and how many credible sources back you up.

The practical difference

SEO asks: can this page rank for the term? GEO asks: if a model had to recommend three businesses for this job right now, would it have enough clear, corroborated evidence to name yours? Most UK businesses fail that test for reasons that are entirely fixable.

Coverage

The engines we optimise for

The work overlaps heavily across all four, because they reward the same things. We report on the ones your buyers actually use.

Covered

ChatGPT

The default assistant for most buyers, and increasingly the first place a shortlist gets drafted.

Covered

Perplexity

Cites sources openly, so it shows fastest whether your content is being read and trusted.

Covered

Gemini

Sits close to Google's own understanding of your business, which makes entity data critical.

Covered

Claude

Used heavily inside businesses, which matters when the person asking is a procurement lead.

Is this your problem

Signs you have a GEO problem specifically

The mechanics

How generative engines decide who to name

Generative engines favour businesses they can read cleanly, verify independently and trust to be current. That comes down to four things: content that answers a question in one self-contained passage, business information that matches everywhere it appears, credible third-party sources that say the same thing about you, and evidence that all of it is up to date.

  • 01

Content a model can lift without guessing If the answer to a buyer's question is scattered across three paragraphs, a bullet list and a call to action, a model will take a competitor who answered it in forty words under a clear heading. Ambiguity is the enemy here. Vague claims like "market-leading service" give a model nothing to repeat, while a specific, checkable statement does.
  • 02

Entity consistency across the web Your name, address, services, sectors, founder and specialisms need to read the same on your site, Companies House, LinkedIn, your Google Business Profile and every directory that lists you. Contradictions make you a low-confidence entity, and models avoid naming a business they cannot pin down. This is the single most common reason a good company is invisible.
  • 03

Corroboration from sources that are not you Models weight what other credible sites say about you far more heavily than what you say about yourself. Trade press, supplier and partner pages, industry bodies, award listings, directories and review platforms all feed the picture. This is the slowest part of the work and the hardest for a competitor to copy, which is exactly why it is worth doing.
  • 04

Freshness and machine readability AI crawlers render JavaScript less reliably than Google does, so content that only appears after scripts run may never be read. Sliders, tabbed panels and script-driven sections are frequent culprits. Stale pages also get passed over: models lean towards sources that look current, so dated content quietly costs you mentions.
This is a mechanism, not a mystery. Every one of these four is something we can audit, measure and improve, which is why our process runs in that order.

Our GEO process

How we run Generative Engine Optimisation

Five stages, in sequence. You see the output of each one, so there is no monthly mystery.

01

Prompt-based visibility audit

We write the questions your buyers genuinely ask and run them across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, recording whether you are named, cited or absent, and who appears instead of you.

So you start from evidence, not assumption.

02

Structural rewrite for extractability

We rewrite priority pages so each buyer question is answered directly and completely in one place, with question-led headings and the answer sitting at the top rather than buried under a preamble.

So engines can quote you cleanly.

03

Entity and schema markup

Organisation, service and FAQ schema, plus a sweep of every place your business details appear, so your name, address, services and specialisms tell one consistent story.

So models know exactly who you are.

04

Authority signal building

Citation building, consistent NAP data, and earning third-party mentions on the sites your sector actually respects. Slower than the structural work, and considerably harder for a competitor to undo.

So other sources back up your claims.

05

Ongoing prompt monitoring

We re-run your prompt set every month and report movement in mentions and citations across engines, alongside your organic performance. Rank tracking alone cannot see any of this.

So you can judge the work on results.

Who does the work

The senior person who scopes your GEO programme is the person who delivers it and the person who answers your emails. No account manager layer, no handover to a junior after the pitch.

Want to know what AI says about you right now?

The audit is free, and you keep the report whether or not you work with us.

Deliverables

What is included

Literal deliverables, not adjectives. This is what lands in your inbox.

  • Prompt-testing audit across at least three AI engines showing where you are named, where you are cited and where a competitor takes the answer.
  • Entity and schema implementation covering organisation, service and FAQ markup plus consistent business details across the sources models read.
  • Competitor visibility benchmarking so you can see which rivals are being recommended in your place and on what basis.
  • Content restructuring for five to ten priority pages rewritten so each buyer question is answered directly and can be lifted without editing.
  • Monthly citation tracking report showing mentions and citations by engine over time rather than a one-off snapshot.
  • A senior point of contact which is the person doing the work rather than an account manager relaying messages.

A worked example

What a GEO problem actually looks like

The example below is a composite illustration built from patterns we see repeatedly, not a real client. It shows the shape of the work rather than a promised result.

The situation

A 30-person commercial cleaning company in south London. Forty Google reviews averaging 4.8. Ranking in the top three for its main service and location terms. Enquiries flat for over a year despite traffic holding steady.

What the audit finds

  • Named in none of the four engines for "who should I use for office cleaning in London". Three competitors appear consistently.
  • The trading name appears three different ways across directories: full legal name, an old brand from before a rebrand, and an abbreviation.
  • Service pages open with "with over 20 years of experience" rather than answering the question the page title asks.
  • Two third-party mentions in five years, both now dead links.
  • Case studies sit behind a contact form, so no engine has ever read them.

What the work would be

  • Rewrite eight priority pages so the answer sits in the first forty words under a question-led heading.
  • Settle on one canonical business record and correct every directory, profile and listing to match it.
  • Implement organisation, service and FAQ schema so the entity is explicit rather than inferred.
  • Rebuild the lost citations and earn new mentions in trade press and sector bodies.
  • Move the case studies in front of the form so they can be read, cited and quoted.
What moves first: the structural and entity work is usually readable by engines within weeks, because the corrections are on pages they already crawl. The mention building is slower and compounds over months. Both are tracked in the same monthly prompt report, so you can see which half is doing the work.

GEO is about being trusted enough to be recommended. AEO is about being structured enough to be extracted. Your buyers use both, so we run both.

Timeline

What to expect, month by month

Honest sequencing rather than a promised date. The first months are fixable structure, the later ones are earned authority.
WhenWhat we are doingWhat you see
Month 1Prompt-based audit, competitor benchmarking, full entity sweep across every place your details appearA baseline report showing exactly where you are absent and who is named instead
Months 2–3Structural rewrites on priority pages, schema implementation, entity corrections pushed live everywhereFirst movement in the tracking: pages being read cleanly, early mentions appearing
Months 3–6Citation rebuilding, third-party mentions, review recency, and expanding the prompt set as new questions emergeA visible trend in mention and citation rate rather than isolated wins
Month 6 onwardsMaintenance, freshness, defending the mentions you have earned and widening into adjacent buyer questionsCompounding visibility, reported monthly alongside organic performance

These are the patterns we plan against, not guarantees. A site with clean foundations moves faster than one carrying years of inconsistent information, and we will tell you which one you are at the audit stage.

Sector relevance

Why this matters if you sell to businesses

In facilities management, cleaning and property, the shortlist is now often drawn up before anyone visits a website. Buyers ask an assistant who to consider, then research the names it gives them.

We also work with security, B2B services, fintech, legal, hospitality and charity clients. Read more on how to get your business cited by ChatGPT, or see all sectors. See all sectors.

Proof, honestly framed

New service line, proven method

We are one of the first UK agencies offering dedicated Generative Engine Optimisation, so we are not going to show you five years of GEO case studies. Nobody has them.

What we can show you is the organic work this method is built on: a facilities management client grown from £9M to £30M through organic search and email, and a commercial cleaning client built from £0 to £1M in annual organic revenue through SEO and content marketing. Both were won the same way generative engines now reward, by answering the buyer’s question better and more clearly than anyone else in the sector.

Clear pricing

We publish our rates, which is still unusual for a UK GEO agency. You should be able to work out whether this is affordable before you speak to anyone.

All packages run on a minimum three month term, then monthly. Unused hours do not roll over. Prices exclude ad spend, which is paid directly to the platform. What moves the price: how competitive your sector is, how many locations you serve, whether content is included, and how much you keep in-house. We will tell you if you do not need something. We would rather sell you three services that work than six that dilute the budget.

Why Lobo Digital

Why work with us on this

Every agency has added AI to its homepage this year. Here is what is actually different here.

01

You brief the person doing the work

No account manager layer, no junior picking up the file after the pitch. The senior person who scopes your AI search programme is the one who delivers it and the one who answers your emails.

02

We built our own visibility tooling

The AI Visibility Checker is ours, not a white-labelled dashboard resold at a markup. It means we can look at what the engines actually say about you rather than at someone else's score out of a hundred.

03

Sector experience from the inside

Seven years in-house at head of department level in facilities management and property before the agency existed. We know how those buyers shortlist, which is exactly what an AI recommendation is competing for.

04

Honest about what cannot be promised

Pricing is published on the site. Nobody here will tell you they can guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation, because nobody can. You get monthly reporting on citations and mentions, so you can judge the work yourself.

The shift

Ranking first no longer means getting found

Buyers used to type a keyword and work down a list of links. Now they ask a question and get an answer.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews read the web, summarise it, and name a small handful of businesses. If your competitors are in that handful and you are not, the enquiry is gone before anyone reaches a website. You can still be sitting at position one for the keyword and never appear in the answer.

A lot of people in this space overcomplicate things, but he explained everything in a way that made sense and took the time to answer all my questions without rushing. You can tell he genuinely cares about the businesses he works with and isn’t just trying to push services. Really appreciate the support.

    FAQs

    Generative Engine Optimisation, answered

No, and any agency that does is guessing. Generative answers are written fresh each time rather than pulled from a ranked index, so there is no position to buy or lock in. What we can do is remove the reasons you are currently left out: content an engine cannot lift cleanly, business information that contradicts itself across the web, and a thin record of anyone else mentioning you. Fix those and you become a candidate for the answer instead of an absence from it.

ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google Gemini and Claude as standard, and we will add any engine your buyers actually use if you know of one. The underlying work overlaps heavily because all four reward the same things: clear self-contained content, consistent entity information and credible third-party mentions. Google AI Overviews sits slightly apart and is handled through our Answer Engine Optimisation service, which most GEO clients run alongside this.

Generative Engine Optimisation is about being trusted enough to be recommended by an AI assistant. Answer Engine Optimisation is about being structured enough for a search engine to lift your answer directly, which covers Google AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice results. GEO leans on entity data, citations and third-party evidence. AEO leans on question-led headings, concise answers and schema. They share foundations and most businesses benefit from running both.

Structural work such as schema, entity clean-up and rewriting pages for extractability can register within a few weeks, because engines re-read your site relatively often. The slower half is authority: building the third-party mentions and consistent references that generative models weigh most heavily. That usually takes three to six months to shift meaningfully, and it keeps compounding after that. You see the trend monthly in the prompt tracking either way.

Yes. Generative engines draw heavily on content that is crawlable, well linked and already regarded as credible, so GEO has very little to work with on a thin or technically broken site. If your organic foundations are weak we will tell you on the first call and point you at SEO first. GEO is a layer on top of good SEO, not a replacement for it.

We build a set of the questions your buyers genuinely ask, run them across the AI engines every month, and record three things: whether you are named, whether you are cited as a source, and which competitors appear when you do not. That gives you a visibility trend over time rather than a one-off snapshot, reported alongside your normal organic performance so you can see both together.
