Answer Engine Optimisation
Answer Engine Optimisation: Win Google's AI Overviews, Featured Snippets and Voice Search
Google now answers your buyer's question at the top of the page, in someone's words. AEO is the work that makes sure they are yours.
Trusted by UK businesses in facilities management, cleaning, property and Hospitality

Guaranteed rent is an arrangement where a company leases a property from a landlord and pays a fixed monthly rent whether or not the property is occupied, taking on tenant sourcing and management in return.
Illustrative example of the answer audit that opens every AEO engagement. Yours runs your real buyer questions.
Plain English
What is Answer Engine Optimisation?
Answer Engine Optimisation is the practice of structuring your content so that Google’s AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice assistants can lift a direct answer straight from your page. It positions your business as the source of the answer rather than one more link underneath it.
Traditional SEO earns you a place in the list. AEO earns you the answer above the list. Those are two different jobs, and the second one is now the part most people read.
It matters because the answer box is not neutral ground. Google picks one passage, from one page, and shows it to everyone searching that question. Whoever wrote that passage gets the credibility, the brand recall and, on commercial queries, the click.
The practical difference
SEO asks: can this page rank for the term? AEO asks: if Google had to lift a forty word answer to this question right now, is yours the clearest one available? Most pages fail that test for a boring reason. The answer is buried three paragraphs down, under a preamble about how long the company has been trading.
AEO is Google-native
AEO targets Google’s own answer surfaces plus the voice assistants that read from them. Getting named by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude is a different discipline with different mechanics, and that is Generative Engine Optimisation. Most clients run both.
Coverage
The answer surfaces we optimise for
Covered
Google AI Overviews
The AI summary above the results. It cites a small handful of sources, and most people never scroll past it.
Covered
Featured snippets
The boxed answer at position zero. Still shown, still clicked, and now a frequent feeder into the AI Overview above it.
Covered
People Also Ask
The expanding question boxes. Often the cheapest wins available, and they multiply your presence on a single results page.
Covered
Voice assistants
Google Assistant, Siri and Alexa read out one answer. There is no second place and no list to scroll.

Not sure which you need?
The free AI Visibility Audit runs your real buyer questions across both Google's answer surfaces and the AI assistants, then tells you which side of the problem you actually have.
Is this your problem
Signs you have an AEO problem specifically
| What you are seeing | What it usually means | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| You rank in the top five but clicks have fallen since AI Overviews arrived | Google is answering the question above you, using someone else's wording | AEO, starting with answer-block rewrites |
| A competitor holds the featured snippet and you sit directly beneath it | Their answer is formatted for extraction and yours is not | AEO snippet audit and reformatting |
| ChatGPT cites you but Google AI Overviews never do | Your authority is fine, your on-page structure is the blocker | AEO structural work |
| Your FAQ content is genuinely good but nothing shows in People Also Ask | No question-led headings and no FAQ schema for Google to read | AEO schema and heading work |
| AI Overviews mention you but describe your services or area wrongly | Your business information contradicts itself across the web | GEO entity work |
| Nothing of yours ranks on page one for these questions yet | Extraction draws almost entirely from pages Google already surfaces | SEO foundations first |
If the honest answer is SEO first, we will say so on the call rather than sell you an AEO retainer with nothing to extract from.
The mechanics
How AI Overviews and featured snippets choose content
Extraction is a mechanism, not luck. Google is looking for the passage that answers the query most directly, on a page it already trusts. Four things decide whether that passage is yours.
01
One question per section, answered immediately Every extractable answer starts with a question-led heading and answers it in the first forty to sixty words. No scene setting, no company history, no market context. If your answer arrives in sentence four, the competitor who answered it in sentence one takes the box. Specific, checkable statements get lifted. Phrases like "market-leading service" give Google nothing to repeat.02
Formatting that matches the answer type Google lifts paragraphs for definition queries, numbered lists for process queries and tables for comparisons. Answering a "how do I" question in a dense paragraph will not win the snippet no matter how well it is written. We check what format each target query currently returns, then write to match it.03
E-E-A-T signals it can actually verify Google favours pages with a named author who is visibly qualified, sources it can check, and a visible last-updated date. Anonymous, undated content loses to an equivalent page with a real person and a real date attached. This is one of the cheapest fixes available and one of the most routinely skipped.04
Structured data that removes the guesswork FAQPage, HowTo, Article and Organisation schema tell Google what each part of your page is, rather than leaving it to infer. Schema does not force a snippet, and any agency saying it does is overselling. What it does is remove the ambiguity that costs you one.
The prerequisite nobody mentions
AI Overviews and featured snippets are drawn overwhelmingly from pages already ranking on page one. AEO turns a ranking page into the answer. It does not lift an invisible page into view. If your target questions have no page-one presence, we will tell you at the audit stage and start with SEO instead.
Format matching
What Google lifts, and how we write for it
The query type decides the answer format. Getting this wrong is the single most common reason a well-written page never wins the box.
| Query type | What Google shows | How we write it |
|---|---|---|
| "What is..." or "How much does..." | Paragraph snippet, roughly 40 to 60 words | The question as an H2 or H3, a direct answer in the first two sentences, then the detail underneath |
| "How do I..." or "Steps to..." | Numbered list snippet | Short numbered steps with the action first, plus HowTo schema where the process is genuinely sequential |
| "Best..." or "X vs Y" | Table or bulleted comparison | A clean comparison table with plain column headers, no merged cells and no images carrying the meaning |
| "Near me" and spoken questions | One answer, read aloud, from one source | Conversational phrasing, full-sentence answers, and consistent local business data behind it |
| "Why does..." or "Can I..." | People Also Ask expansion | A dedicated FAQ block where each answer stands completely on its own, marked up with FAQPage schema |
Our AEO process
How we run Answer Engine Optimisation
Five stages, in sequence. You see the output of each one, so there is no monthly mystery about where the hours went.
01
Question-set audit
We build the list of questions your buyers actually type and speak, check which already trigger an AI Overview, featured snippet or People Also Ask box, and record who owns each answer today.
So you know which questions are winnable before anyone writes a word.
02
Answer-block restructuring
We rewrite priority pages so each question sits under its own heading with a direct forty to sixty word answer immediately beneath it, then the supporting detail. Same expertise, restructured so it can be lifted.
So you give Google something clean to take.
03
Schema implementation
FAQPage, HowTo where a process is genuinely stepped, plus Article, Organisation and breadcrumb markup. Implemented properly and validated, not dropped in by a plugin and left unchecked.
So the ambiguity that costs you the box is removed.
04
E-E-A-T strengthening
Named authors with real credentials, visible publish and update dates, outbound sourcing where a claim needs backing, and a refresh cycle on the pages that carry your revenue.
So you look like a source worth quoting.
05
Answer tracking
Monthly reporting on which target questions return an AI Overview, whether you are cited in it, which snippets you hold, which you have lost and who took them.
So you can see the work rather than take it on trust.
Who does the work
The senior person who scopes your AEO programme is the person who delivers it and the person who answers your emails. No account manager layer, no handover to a junior after the pitch.
Deliverables
What is included
Literal deliverables, not adjectives. This is what lands in your inbox.
- Question-mapping audit across your priority services, showing which questions trigger AI Overviews, snippets and People Also Ask boxes today, and exactly who owns each answer.
- Answer-block rewrites for priority pages restructured so each buyer question is answered directly in the first forty to sixty words and can be lifted without editing.
- FAQ and HowTo schema implementation validated in Google's own testing tools rather than assumed to be working.
- An E-E-A-T pass across your key pages covering author attribution, credentials, outbound sourcing, and publish and update dates.
- A voice phrasing pass on the questions your buyers are likely to ask out loud, so the answer reads naturally when it is spoken rather than scanned.
- Monthly AI Overview and snippet tracking showing what you hold, what you have lost, and which competitor took it.
- A senior point of contact which is the person doing the work rather than an account manager relaying messages.
A worked example
What an AEO problem actually looks like
The example below is a composite illustration built from patterns we see repeatedly. It is not a real client and it is not a promised result. It shows the shape of the work.
The situation
A guaranteed rent company in outer London. Ranking in the top three for its main service and area terms. Rankings unchanged for a year, but landing page traffic has drifted down and enquiries with it.
What the audit finds
- Google returns an AI Overview for "how does guaranteed rent work" and cites two national portals and one competitor. The company is not among them.
- Its own guaranteed rent page spends three paragraphs on company background before it explains what guaranteed rent is.
- No FAQ schema anywhere on the site, despite eleven genuine question-and-answer blocks already written into the page copy.
- Every page is authored by "admin", with no publish or update date visible to a reader or a crawler.
- The "how it works" section is written as flowing prose, so it can never be lifted as a numbered list.
What the work would be
- Move the definition to the top of the page under a question-led heading and answer it in forty words.
- Convert the "how it works" prose into discrete numbered steps and add HowTo schema.
- Mark up the existing FAQ content with FAQPage schema, rewriting each answer so it stands alone out of context.
- Attribute pages to a named person with a real bio, and surface publish and update dates.
- Track the full target question set monthly so wins and losses are both visible.
What moves first: the structural changes usually register quickest, because Google already crawls these pages regularly and only needs to find a cleaner answer than the one it is currently using. Schema and author signals take a little longer to be trusted. Crucially, none of this depends on earning new third-party authority, which is why AEO typically moves faster than GEO.
The shift
Ranking below the answer is not the same as ranking
Studies through 2026 put the share of Google searches that end without a click at around 60 to 65 percent, and when an AI Overview appears that figure climbs higher (SparkToro; Bain & Company).
That is the whole problem in one number. You can hold position two, with a better page than the site above you, and still lose the query, because the answer at the top already satisfied the search.
The response is not to fight the answer box. It is to be in it. The pages that get lifted are not always the most authoritative pages on the topic. They are the ones that answered the question first, plainly, in a format Google could take.
That is a craft, and it is learnable. It is also, right now, still uncontested on a surprising number of commercial questions.

Timeline
What to expect, month by month
| When | What we are doing | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | Question-set build, AI Overview and snippet audit, competitor answer-ownership mapping, technical and schema review | A baseline showing which questions are winnable and who currently owns each answer |
| Month 2 | Answer-block rewrites on priority pages, schema implementation and validation, E-E-A-T pass | Pages re-crawled and re-read, with first movement in snippets and People Also Ask |
| Months 3 to 4 | Second wave of pages, format matching for list and table queries, voice phrasing pass | A widening set of questions where you hold or share the answer |
| Month 4 onwards | Defending what you hold, expanding the question set, refreshing pages as answers shift | A monthly trend across AI Overviews, snippets and People Also Ask, reported next to organic performance |
These are the patterns we plan against, not guarantees. A page already ranking well with clean structure moves quickly. A competitive question with an entrenched incumbent takes longer, and we will tell you which one you are looking at during the audit.
AEO and GEO
Two halves of the same job
Being extracted and being recommended are different problems with different fixes. Here is how they split.
| Answer Engine Optimisation | Generative Engine Optimisation | |
|---|---|---|
| The job | Being structured enough to be extracted | Being trusted enough to be recommended |
| Where it shows | AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude |
| What it leans on | Question-led headings, concise answers, schema, format matching | Entity consistency, third-party citations, corroboration |
| How fast it moves | Weeks to a few months, because it works on pages already ranking | Three to six months, because authority is earned rather than edited |
| Start here if | You rank well but are losing clicks to an answer above you | Competitors get named in AI chat answers and you never do |
Most businesses need both. AEO is usually the faster of the two to show a result, which is why we often start there and let the authority work compound underneath it.
Sector relevance
Why this matters if you sell to businesses
B2B buyers ask how something works long before they ask who to use. Own the explanation and you are already in the room when the shortlist gets drawn up.
In-House Experience
Facilities management
Facility managers search procedural questions: compliance intervals, what a service actually covers, what it should cost. Those are precisely the queries Google now answers with a lifted paragraph or a numbered list.
£1M Results
Commercial Cleaning
"How much does office cleaning cost per square foot" returns an answer, not a list of cleaners. Owning that answer puts you in front of the buyer while they are still working out the budget.
In-House Experience
Property management
Landlords ask how things work before they ask who to trust. Guaranteed rent, notice periods, licensing. Answer those clearly and your name is attached to the explanation they act on.
We also work with security, B2B services, fintech, legal, hospitality and charity clients. See all sectors.
Proof, honestly framed
New service line, proven method
We are one of the first UK agencies offering dedicated Answer Engine Optimisation, so we are not going to show you five years of AI Overview case studies. Almost nobody has them, and what you will usually be shown is older snippet work relabelled.
What we can show you is the organic work this method is built on. Both results below were won by answering the buyer’s question more clearly than anyone else in the sector, which is exactly what an answer engine now rewards.
£9M → £30M
Facilities Management
Organic search brought in the enquiries. Email marketing converted the ones that were not ready yet. Two services, compounding across several years.
Services: SEO · Email Marketing
£0 → £1M
Commercial Cleaning
An organic channel built from nothing. Content answered what buyers were searching for, SEO made sure they found it. Now over £1M in annual revenue.
Services: SEO · Content Marketing
Launch → Page One
Property Management
A guaranteed rent startup with no website at all. We built the site to convert, then ranked it locally. Page one of Google from a standing start.
Services: Web Design · Local SEO
What it costs
We publish our rates, which is still unusual for a UK AEO agency. You should be able to work out whether this is affordable before you speak to anyone. Most clients run AEO inside the Growth package, alongside SEO and content.

Need more than 40 hours?
Our largest package runs at 65 hours a month. Because that is a significant share of our capacity, we scope it on a call first to make sure we can deliver properly before you commit.
All packages run on a minimum three month term, then monthly. Unused hours do not roll over. Prices exclude ad spend, which is paid directly to the platform. What moves the price: how competitive your sector is, how many locations you serve, whether content is included, and how much you keep in-house. We will tell you if you do not need something. We would rather sell you three services that work than six that dilute the budget.
Why Lobo Digital
Why work with us on this
01
You brief the person doing the work
No account manager layer and no junior picking up the file after the pitch. The senior person who scopes your AEO programme is the one who rewrites the pages and the one who answers your emails.
02
We built our own visibility tooling
The AI Visibility Checker is ours, not a white-labelled dashboard resold at a markup. It means we look at what the engines actually return for your questions, rather than at someone else's score out of a hundred.
03
Sector experience from the inside
Seven years in-house at head of department level in facilities management and property before the agency existed. We know which questions those buyers ask before they ever contact a supplier, which is exactly what an answer box is competing to satisfy.
04
Honest about what cannot be promised
Pricing is published on the site. Nobody here will guarantee you a featured snippet or a place in an AI Overview, because Google rewrites both without notice and no agency controls that. What you get is monthly reporting on exactly what you hold and what you have lost, so you can judge the work on evidence.
We love them

FAQs
Answer Engine Optimisation, answered
Yes. Featured snippets still appear on a large share of searches, they still get clicked, and the pages that win them are frequently the same pages Google draws on when it builds an AI Overview above them. Optimising for snippets is not a legacy activity. It is the most reliable route into the AI answer, and it keeps working on the many queries where no AI Overview is shown at all.
Answer Engine Optimisation is about being structured so a search engine can extract your answer. Generative Engine Optimisation is about being trusted enough for an AI assistant to recommend you. AEO targets Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice results, and relies on question-led headings, concise answers, format matching and schema. GEO targets ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, and relies on entity consistency and third-party citations. They share foundations, and most businesses benefit from running both.
Not separately, but they do need specific attention. Voice assistants usually read out a single answer, and that answer is normally drawn from the same featured snippet and structured data that AEO already targets. What differs is phrasing: spoken questions are longer, more conversational and more often local. We include a voice phrasing pass inside the answer-block work rather than selling it as a separate service, because the underlying optimisation is the same.
Usually positively, and not negatively when it is done properly. Answer-block restructuring, valid schema and stronger E-E-A-T signals are all things Google’s ranking systems reward in their own right, so the same work tends to help both. The one thing to watch is that winning a featured snippet can reduce clicks on purely informational queries, because some people get what they need from the box. We account for that by prioritising questions with commercial intent, where being the answer wins the enquiry rather than ending it.
For most queries, yes. Google draws AI Overviews and featured snippets overwhelmingly from pages already ranking in the top results, so AEO turns a ranking page into the answer rather than lifting an invisible page into view. If your target questions have no page-one presence yet, we will tell you at the audit stage and recommend SEO foundations first.
We run your target question set every month and record, for each question, whether an AI Overview appears, whether you are cited inside it, whether you hold the featured snippet or a People Also Ask slot, and which competitor takes the answer when you do not. That gives you a trend across all the answer surfaces rather than a single snapshot, reported alongside your normal organic performance so you can see both together.
Structural work often registers within weeks, because Google re-crawls pages it already ranks and only needs to find a clearer answer than the one it is currently using. Schema and author signals typically take a little longer to be trusted. Broadly, AEO moves faster than GEO because it does not depend on earning new third-party authority, though a competitive question with an entrenched incumbent will always take longer than an unclaimed one.
The work still holds its value. Everything AEO does, from clear question-led structure and direct answers through to valid schema and verifiable authorship, is what search engines and AI assistants have rewarded through every format change so far. The surfaces get renamed and redesigned regularly. The underlying preference for content that answers a question cleanly does not.
